Milton Gray Campbell was the first African American to win the Olympic gold medal in the decathlon in the 1956 Olympics in Melbourne, Australia.

He was also a football and track and field star at Indiana University for two years before he enlisted into the Navy in 1955. After the Navy he became a running back for the NFL Cleveland Browns.

Campbell died this past Friday in his home in Gainesville, Georgia due to prostrate cancer. He was 78.
